A Long time ago in a land far far away, lol -- actually, it was more like 14th Street and 8th Avenue in Manhattan *smile* -- I had the great opportunity to work for a time at the Modern Language Association, got to play with languages and have my kind of fun! But even better, I got to meet the Heaths! Yip, found them in one of the reviews and have cherished this family for years since then. They have become a part of my own personal Christmas tradition. I remember them every year.
On the 3rd Day of Christmas another gift for you,
3 Fun Family Stories to chase away the blues!
Just who exactly are the Heaths?
Well...lol... I think they are the sweetest family I have ever come across. And I have prepared three of their stories to share with you. These stories were written and published by Aloise Buckley Heath-- who just happened to be the sister of famous William F. Buckley and a part of a rather large and prolific family.. She was a wife, a mother, an editor and a writer who decided to share her family with all of us, Through her accounts of their dailies she has brought great entertainment and much laughter to those of us who have taken the opportunity to read all about trials and tribulations of the Heaths.
If you ever thought your family was just a wee bit over the top, it may be the right time to meet the Heaths. Aloise Buckly Heath's account of the antics of her 10 children and beloved hubby, oil tycoon Benjamin W. Heath -- especially during the holidays -- is a poignant reminder that family is a very special experience indeed. The hilarious, albeit innocent, exploits of the Heaths are sure to inspire you to laugh right out loud. And it would be cool if her stories motivate to even reflect upon the past spent with family (be it biologically induced or otherwise happily acquired) with an eye towards a focus on the more humourous side of life. In spite of life's disappointments, good times keep rolling in. Gotta work to recognise them. When we spot them and allow them buoy us, boy they really rock!
The Heaths are very special -- that they are. And Mama Heath captured the true spirit of family in her retelling of her seasonal tales. Though the stories hark from many decades past and life keeps changing through the ages, it is clear that some things never do seem to change-- oh yes, kids will be kids, especially during the holiday season!
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans... And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. -- The Desiderata Max Ehrmann (1927)
I have re-read these pieces many times. Each time they seem relatable, fresh and new, and they get me laughing every time. Here's hoping you will delight in them too! Even better... take some time out to remember 3 of the best and funniest times you have had with family. Savour these special times. Life and living can be challenging for sure, but in spite of all the disappointments, the good times are very special too!
And now, the gift of story-telling just for you.
Three Heath Family Stories
The Family that Plays Together Stays Together
My mother's special gift to me
As far back as I can remember -- and oooh the road behind is getting awfully long now -- playing and games have always been an integral part of family existence. Sweet Mama's affect always seem to broadcast "responsible" and "adult", but my dear one was always quick to kick off her shoes and get her feet wet, both literally and figuratively -- Mama loved to wade in streams. She was not afraid to let her inner child come out and play. Sweet Mama would surprise you with a tickle in giggly places when least expected, and when I look back on photos of her having pillow fights or just rough housing with her children, I can't help but smile. Jamaican children's games, board games, card games, Bible games, writing games, talking games, games of whatever sort they may be, Sweet Mama was always game to join in and enjoy the fun.
Mama lost her own Dear One when she was just a teen and it always amazed me how someone who had lost so many chances for guidance just grew up on her own and got it all right. Her wise counsel has always been my guide. Her willingness to join in and play always made me feel included. Even in the aftermath of a cerebral infarct, Sweet Mama was up for challenge of her favourite card game, "Progressive Rummy" and yes, she played on well.
We were a family that not only played together, but the parents always took us to lakes and beaches and trips in our youth. In my parents' lives there was much travel, camping, cruises and more; good times with family and friends. And nothing was ever more fun than the coming together at Christmastime!
