At New Moon the Moon and Sun share the same celestial longitude, rising and setting together. The night sky is moonless and at its darkest, making it the best time for observing faint stars, galaxies and nebulae. The gravitational alignment of Sun, Moon and Earth produces the strongest spring tides of the lunar cycle. Many cultures mark the New Moon as the start of the lunar month — a threshold moment for planting seeds, setting intentions and beginning new projects.
